Be Transformed
Romans 12:1-24 min
Paul's verb for transformation is passive. The work is not your tightening grip but your continued presence. Renewal is the slow rewiring as the truth of the gospel keeps meeting the lies that drive the craving.
Scripture
Romans 12:1-2
Read
Romans is twelve chapters of doctrine before Paul says therefore. He has been building. The mercy of God in Christ has been laid out in slow argument: salvation by grace through faith, the union of Jew and Gentile, the security of being held in the Spirit. Then comes the turn.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
-- Romans 12:1
Notice the verb. Present. It is the same word a priest used for an offering at the altar. Paul is saying: the way you live, the body you walk around in, the day you spend, is itself worship. Not preliminary to worship. The thing.
Then the famous line.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
-- Romans 12:2
The grammar is doing more work than we usually notice. Be transformed is passive. It is metamorphousthe, the same root as the word for what a butterfly does. It is something done to you as you stay in the chrysalis. Paul is not saying transform yourself. He is saying let yourself be transformed. The work is not your tightening grip; it is your continued presence.
The tool of that transformation is the renewal of your mind. Renewal, anakainosis, is a word for what is made new by being remade, not by being decorated. Paul is not asking you to think harder. He is naming a slow rewiring as the truth of the gospel keeps meeting the lies you have been believing.
What lies?
The chapters before this list a few. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. That meets the lie I have crossed a line he will not come back across. We are heirs together with Christ. That meets I am a hired servant at best. The Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. That meets I have to find the right words or I will not be heard.
The lies have been in your head for years. The truth replaces them slowly, one collision at a time.
Today
Some of us have tried to fight a habit by trying harder. We have made resolutions. We have set rules. We have written affirmations. We have done willpower until willpower broke. And we have wondered why the same patterns return as soon as we are tired.
Paul names a different way. The transformation is not your willpower; it is the renewing of your mind. The lie underneath the craving, I am alone, I am too much, I am not enough, I will never change, is the thing that needs to change. It does not change in a flash. It changes the way roads change after rain. Slowly, one season at a time, with the same weather meeting the same path.
Show up today. Not to push harder. To present. Bring your body to the altar, your fed body, your tired body, your body that wants something it has not been able to find. Read the gospel. Sit with one true sentence about who you are in Christ. Let it meet a sentence you have been telling yourself.
The renewing is being done to you while you sit there.
Welcome to the second week of this plan. The first week was about feeling. This week is about the slow change in the mind that lets the feeling find a different home.
Pause
Take a slow breath.
Sit with what you've read.
Ponder
What lie about yourself has been driving the habit you want to leave?
What true sentence from the gospel could meet that lie this week?
Where are you trying to transform yourself rather than letting yourself be transformed?
Pray
A prayer
God of mercy and renewal, Hallowed is the name of the One who makes the heart new from the inside. Let your kingdom come into the grooves of my mind. Let your will be done in the slow rewiring of the lies I have believed. Give me today the bread of one true sentence. Forgive me for trying to transform myself by white-knuckle. Free me from the conformity I have not noticed. Lead me to the altar where I am the offering. Deliver me from the lie that you are waiting for me to change before you do anything in me. I present my body. I present my mind. Renew them.
Amen.
Go in peace. He is making you new.
