The Voice in the Cool of the Day

Genesis 3:1-133 min

Adam and Eve's first instinct after the fruit was not confession but cover. The voice that came looking for them in the garden has not changed, and neither has the gentleness behind it.

Scripture

Genesis 3:1-13

Key moment Genesis 3:8-13

Read

There was an hour in the garden, Genesis tells us, when God walked among the trees and the air softened toward evening. It was a familiar hour. The first humans had been in the habit of meeting him there.

This evening, they did not come.

They had eaten the fruit. Their eyes had been opened, just as the serpent promised, but not in the way they had imagined. The first thing they saw clearly was themselves. They sewed fig leaves together to cover what suddenly felt unbearable to leave uncovered. The leaves were not enough. So they hid among the trees.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

-- Genesis 3:8

Notice what happened first. Not the fall. The hiding.

And notice what followed. Where are you? God asks. He is not asking for information; he is asking the way a parent asks a child who has been playing too long in another room. He is calling them out.

Adam's answer is honest, in its way. I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. The first emotion named in scripture is not guilt. It is fear. He did not feel guilty enough to confess; he felt afraid enough to hide. There is a difference, and the difference still matters.

The fig leaves had not worked, so he made the trees his cover. So began a long habit of the human heart. When something inside feels too exposed, we reach for whatever we hope will hide it.

Today

The garden has changed. The trees have been replaced by other things. A glass that takes the edge off. A scroll that drowns out the silence. A body or a screen that, for a few minutes, lets you forget what you are afraid of.

You tell yourself it is the substance you crave, but underneath there is something you are hiding from. A loneliness. A grief that hasn't found its words. A fear of being seen and found wanting. A self you suspect will not survive close attention.

The voice has not changed.

Where are you?

Not 'what have you done?' Not 'how dare you?' Just where are you. He is still walking in the cool of the day. He is still looking. He is not surprised by what he finds, and he is not standing there waiting to lecture. He is asking the only question that begins a way home.

Stepping out from behind the leaves is the first scary thing. Saying 'I am here,' afraid and ashamed and tired, feels more vulnerable than the cover. But the cover has not been hiding you so much as it has been keeping you alone.

Today, you do not have to fix anything. You only have to answer the question.

Where are you?

He will know what to do next.

Pause

Take a slow breath.
Sit with what you've read.

Ponder

  1. What feeling have you been most likely to hide from lately, and what have you been hiding behind?

  2. If God's 'Where are you?' came to you tonight, what is the honest answer?

  3. What might it look like to step out from behind the leaves, just for the next hour?

Pray

A prayer

Faithful God, who walks in the cool of the day, Hallowed is the name of the One who keeps coming to look for the children who hide. Let your kingdom come into the rooms I have closed off. Let your will be done in the corners where I have been alone with what I cannot bear to feel. Give me today the bread I have been trying to find elsewhere. Feed me with what actually feeds. Forgive me for the running, and for the part of me that did not believe you would still want to find me. Lead me out from behind the leaves. Deliver me from the lie that you would rather not see me as I am. I am here. I am yours.

Amen.

Go in peace. He has been looking for you.

Pass it on

Do you know someone who needs this today?
